Specimens of a singular multiply of worm, that can grow up to 5 feet long, have been detected by scientists.

Giant shipworms can grown up to 1.55m (5ft) in length and 6cm (2.3in) in diameter.

The slippery creatures have been famous about for years, but now they have been found in the Philippines, according to the BBC.

The shipworm spends its life encased in a tough shell, submerged head-down in mud, which it feeds on.

And the sparkling find has been documented in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS).

Dr Daniel Distel, arch author of the report, said: ‘The bizarre shells have been found for centuries, since they are very stout and they last a prolonged time.

‘But we’ve never famous where to find them.’

There’s now a drive-thru weed shop (in America, of course)

It was one of Dr Distel’s students who stumbled on the slippery find on social media.

Dr Distel said: ‘One of the students came in and said, ‘hey, demeanour at this’, he’d found this really good video on YouTube.

‘We searched the novel and the systematic sources for years, and then we find it on YouTube. It’s the spectacle of social media.’

The hulk shipworms are not only singular for their size, but also their diets.

They feed on sand and sea lees and as a result, they have smaller digestive systems compared to other shipworms.

Until now, drawings of a poorly-preserved passed hulk shipworm from the 1960s was all scientists had to go on.

But the researchers are being clever not to exhibit the accurate plcae of the worms, which were once found all over the globe.

Their outward tubes fetch a high asking price, putting them at risk of poachers.

A video showing the scientists slicing off one finish of the shipworm’s bombard before jolt it out creates for constrained viewing.

Dr Distel said: ‘It was like opening a soft-boiled egg. we just tapped on it very, very easily with a chisel, done a circle, and the bombard came off, just like an egg.

‘It feels a lot like it looks – it’s kind of slimy, but it wasn’t objectionable, it didn’t smell bad.’
